On 24th July 2018, the Court of Appeal unanimously agreed in the case of JT v First Tier Tribunal that the 'same roof rule' was incompatible with Article 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

On 12 July 2018 representatives of Emmott Snell Solicitors attended the annual APIL/ACAL conference.
APIL is a non-profit making organisation that has been campaigning and fighting for the rights of injured people for over 25 years. The Association of Child Abuse Lawyers (ACAL) is also a non-profit making organisation, which was set up to support and assist victims, lawyers, and professionals involved in obtaining compensation for those who have suffered abuse (sexual, physical or psychological) abuse as children.

Claiming compensation for accidents at work

Every year a significant number of workers are made ill and/or injured at work. According to statistics released by the Health & Safety Executive :
- 137 workers were killed at work
- 31.2 million working days were lost due to work-related ill-health and non-fatal workplace injuries
- 1.3 million work-related ill-health cases
On Tuesday 8 May 2018 May, Tracey Emmott and Jacqui Morton of Emmott Snell Solicitors had the pleasure of visiting and meeting with representatives of Victim Support, Bedfordshire at their offices at Bedford Heights.
The purpose of our visit was to find out more about the services that Victim Support offer, and to present a cheque for £415.63 that we raised by participating in the 2017 sponsored Bedford Legal Walk.

Bedford Law Society Annual Dinner 2018

On Friday 16 March 2018, representatives of Emmott Snell Solicitors had the pleasure of attending the annual Bedford Law Society Dinner.
The dinner was held in the Howard Room of the Bedford Corn Exchange located on St Paul’s Square in the Castle area of Bedford.
The Corn Exchange is a well-known, historic venue which hosts hundreds of events each year.
In 2015 Miss 'X' contacted Emmott Snell Solicitors and told us that she wanted to pursue a personal injury claim against the social services department of the local authority, arising from sexual assaults, neglect and physical abuse suffered by her shortly after her birth until she was 11 years old.
Allegations of sexual harassment and abuse have taken centre stage over the past couple of years.
The list of household names either prosecuted or under suspicion continues to grow. A recent wave of allegations includes James Franco and Bill Cosby. And only a few days ago the Glee actor, Mark Salling, was found dead (widely reported to be suicide) after pleading guilty in December to possessing child pornography. He was only a few weeks from being sentenced.
The role of the Litigation Friend

Where a child or vulnerable adult has been harmed, it is necessary to consider who will represent them in any compensation claim brought on their behalf.
In law, children and those who are deemed to lack capacity (known as protected parties) must be represented in their claims by a suitable and competent adult.
These adults are known as “litigation friends”.
